Top Mountain Bike rides in Tignes

Tignes has some of the best and most well kept purpose-built bike trails in France, We have selected some of our favourite rides to appeal to beginner and advanced downhill bikers, aged 10+.

These rides are mainly for bikes with full-suspension but there are a couple we’ve included for pottering on the hardtail bikes we give away (free to use) in our hotel. There are of course many more rides you can do on these bikes. For the DH trails, you can rent a full suspension bike and pads.

Road Cycling in Tignes

A Typical Week in Tignes

Tignes is in the protected Vanoise National Park in the southern alps. It teems with flaura, fauna (that’s wildlife to you and me!) and enjoys a high sunshine record with an impressive altitude range (1550m to 3456m). It’s a region for nature lovers and those with a penchant for a little more adventure, from ages 12+.

The Easy Ride

5.6Km | 1,509ft descent | Green grade with Blue sections | Beginner to intermediate

The Easy Ride as it is known is just that! It’s a flowing ride for beginners (and intermediates) with nice wide switchbacks and banked corners to practise your technique on. Start from the top of Palafour chairlift and end up in the same place you started!

Top Tip: Take our specially designed Downhill MTB lessons to learn how to use the lifts and trails for the week. Rent a full-sus Mtb for these trails.

Brévières lake walk or ride - 1 hr

3Km | 0ft ascent | Easy | Family ride

With so many great cycling trails in the region, we sometimes forget that it’s actually just very lovely to potter around the lake in Brevieres. You don’t need a full-sus bike for this one and you can start from outside or hotel and enjoy an hours’ potter on two wheels, or two feet, as you circumnavigate the lake shore following the pathways and stopping to admire this very pretty waterway. It’s a great opportunity to test your E-bike before joining our complimentary guided E-bike ride.

The Smoothie

5.5Km | 1,645ft descent | Green grade with Blue sections | Beginner to advanced

The Smoothie is one of Tignes’ most famous Downhill bike trails. It’s a Green trail and suits beginner to advanced riders aged 10+. The views are sensational and there’s (optional) jumps and drops on route for more expert riders. We use this trail in combination with our Downhill Mountain Bike lessons (which suit beginners to experts) and you will start by taking the Pallafour chairlift up, before the sensational ride down. It is not a hard ride, but you’ll need some mountain biking ability. Lift passes are free with the MyTignes pass which we include in our Active Packs.

Top Tip: Upgrade to our Adventure Pack for a free 6 day MTB lift pass.

Jump Around

5.7Km | 1,645ft descent | Blue grade | Beginner + to advanced

It starts in the same place as The Smoothie and runs almost in tandem down the same mountain. It’s a more technical version of the famous Smoothie and we often get beginners progressing onto Jump Around after a couple of rides down the Smoothie. You will start by taking the Pallafour chairlift up, before this fun ride down. It is not a challenging ride, but you’ll need some good mountain biking ability, so it isnt for beginners. Lift passes are free with the MyTignes pass which we include in our Active Packs.

Kangooride

1.6Km | 1,530ft descent | Blue to Red grade | Beginner + to advanced

This is a great ride and will suit progressive beginners. After cutting your teeth on Jump Around, confident riders can test their skills over the other side of the valley by taking the Tufs chairlift (Val Claret) for the Kangooride.

If you are a beginner (plus) then ride down slowly enjoying the whoops, berms and humps. If you are an expert then increase the pace and smash the berms and get air off the many fun-size jumps and carve out the big banked corners.

VIEW ON STRAVA

Popeye Trail (Val d’Isère)

12Km | 2,809ft descent | Green + grade | Beginner + to advanced

This is one of our absolute favourite rides. It has been designed as an easy track for Downhill riders, however you’ll need some skills to ride it - so it is not for complete beginners. There are no crazy jumps or drops, but there are some lovely wide banks which the experts will enjoy taking at speed. It’s a smooth trail and wends its way through some incredible scenery all the way into la Daille in Val d’Isère. Start from the top of the Olympique gondola in Val d’Isère or join the trail from the top of the Tovière Gondola in Tignes.

Gunpowder Trail

4.4Km | 1,701ft descent | Blue grade | Beginner + to advanced

This famous Downhill trail begins from the Tovière summit, accessed by the Tovière Gondola or the Tufs Chairlift. It’s a nice long ride and suits Good beginners and advanced as it is graded Blue. It’s a playful Singletrack with a heap of berms, whoops, small drops and jumps. If you are a beginner then take the trail as slowly and smoothly as you choose, remembering to let faster riders past. There are rough sections, but it is mostly smooth and the views are sensational!
