What to expect on an Alpine Holiday

A holiday to the French Alps can be as active or relaxed as you choose. The scenery is stunning, the sun shines in abundance, the walks and bike rides are sensational and the activities will energise the whole family. Our breaks appeal to all tastes and ages, and we give you more than enough free activities for a week away, and double the quota for two weeks, which you might want to consider as one week is never enough to do it all

Which activities can I do?

There are dozens of activities for you to try in each of our resorts and we include the best ones for free in our Active Packs. Our Mountain Team is on hand all week to help you book any extra activities and plan unforgettable days out with your family.

They’ll give you vouchers for our free activities like Whitewater rafting… tree top adventure parks… paddleboarding… and mountain biking or walking adventures with our selection of Route Cards for itinerary suggestions.

You choose...

Our Free Active Packs have more than enough great activities for a week away but you can dial up the excitement with our Adventure Pack upgrade; or opt out of the activities (and even get a discount) by choosing Active Lite, if the activities we include are not for you.

Our Adventure Packs come with a small upgrade cost, but they essentially take our free Active Packs and add some excitement by dialling up the whitewater rafting and adding an extra activity, for those who like to be busy! Not recommended for under 12’s.

Our Mountain Team

Our Mountain staff are the secret ingredient to our holidays! There’s so much to do on a holiday to the Alps that you’ll be in danger of missing the best bits; and this is why we employ a dedicated team of mountain-mad individuals (our Activity staff) to take the stress away and help you plan an amazing week; so you don't waste precious time finding the best activities, bike rides and walks.

They will even be in touch (by phone) before you depart to help you plan your week in advance so we can be ready for your arrival.

Is the family going to enjoy it?

Of course! Whether you’re a solo parent or a complete family, our chalets and hotels are full of like minded British alpine lovers with kids aged 4 to 17. Families enjoy our friendly and welcoming atmosphere; and our excursions are designed for families to be active together, and not apart.

However, we do have a free Active Kids Club in Morzine where parents can drop their kids off for a few hours while they get to enjoy some activities for themselves, safe in the knowledge that your little-un’s will be meeting new friends and enjoying new experiences with our childcare leaders.

Is the mountain biking for me?

The great thing about our resorts is that aside from having some of the best bike trails in Europe, they also have a network of beginner trails to suit every ability. Even 5 year old bikers can experience the lifts and high altitude trails if you follow our Route Cards.

Our bike hosts and Active staff will help you get started with a well-sorted hardtail bike to ride and maps with ride suggestions pitted to your ability. If you are looking to try some Downhill biking (the more serious stuff!) then we’ll hook you up with a full-suspension bike and even some lessons for the less confident riders, which are paid for in resort.

What is an alpine hotel like?

Our hotels are run by us, for our British guests and come with a warm welcome from our dedicated Mountain team. They’re stacked with the latest free-to-use bikes, E-bikes, sports equipment, Kids Clubs and spa facilities. We also run social excursions, day trips and organised walks, guided hikes, bike rides and family activity days.

Most of all, they provide the perfect haven for relaxation with sunny gardens, stunning views and spa areas so you can relax after a hard day in the lakes and mountains. Our hotels really are special places, so don’t leave it too long to book, especially if you want to make use of our family rooms and discounts.

What about a chalet?

Our catered chalets are beautiful alpine homes. They can be shared or booked privately (with group free spaces) and come with the same Free Active Packs and bike hire as our hotels.

After a fun-filled, action-packed day on the mountain, we don’t think that there’s anything better than to come back to your own home-from-home and the mouth-watering aroma of freshly made cake, or the promise of a delicious three-course meal ahead.

What’s the weather like?

The Alps in summer are sunny and warm with temperatures between 25C and 38C during July and August. We get rainy patches, as is common in mountain areas, but the rain never lasts for long. Often we forget how far south the Alps are located. Quite far south of Paris in fact, and on a similar latitude to La Rochelle in Southwest France. So it’s unsurprising they get their fair share of good weather. Pack plenty of good quality sun cream, light rain macs for the odd shower, shorts and T-shirts.

The sunniest (and hottest) resorts are Tignes and Val d'isere which enjoy a very southern location and up to 300 days of sunshine a year.

Will there be enough to do?

Oh yes. In fact, a common thread among guests is that there is simply "too much to do in just one week" and we often find guests staying for two weeks. Our free Active Packs will keep you busy enough all week, (with double the quota of free-activities for two-weeks), but if you have energy left over then try our Adventure upgrade, or our Active Team will hook you up with even more activities - anything from climbing to parapenting, and canyoning to paddleboarding.
