Chamonix is an hour’s drive from Morzine and Les Gets. A vibrant city in the Alps, which is steeped in mountaineering lore and home to Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc. Why not ride up Europe’s highest cable car (Aguille Midi) and walk out onto the viewing ledge at 4,000m+.
Active folk can try glacier walking (crampons rent locally) and if you take the Montenvers train to the glacier lake (Mer de Glace) you will enjoy a spectacular ride up to the ice where you can walk around the glacier or go for a more lengthy hike. Do heed the local signage and advice in this protected glacial zone.
Alternatively, just soak up the mountain vistas, the energy of Cham’ and its vibrant centre with more than 200 shops, bars and cafes to choose from.
Annecy is just over an hour’s drive from Morzine and Les Gets and has a beautiful, large lake and a shoreline peppered with eateries and sunbathing beaches. You can use the cycle track to walk, bike or roller skate (as many do) around the lake. Or just potter around the town and its many shops and cafes.
There is a medieval old town with canals and bridges; and you can visit the 13th-century Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard. It’s a stunning place to visit, enjoy ice cream, lunch and a great day out.
