Tignes is a summer mountain destination with an impressive altitude range of 1550m (where hotel Tetras is based) all the way up to 3456m. We include a visit up to the glacier on the funicular railway (a train that runs through the mountain to the top) so you can experience this magnificent glacier and even walk around the snow in a glacial zone, keeping to the marked areas.
You can upgrade your experience with a glacier hike where a professional guide will take you on a breathtaking walk in glacial snow using crampons and ice axes (don’t worry it’s suitable for complete beginners).
Hike the glacier with a guide, using crampons and ice axes.
Learn MoreDuring June and July you can ski 25kms of piste on Tignes’ glacier.
Learn MoreTOP TIP: The Altitude Experience funicular railway is Free with our Active Pack on the MyTignes pass. Combine it with an afternoon at the lake and use your free SUP or kayak pass at Tignes' lake, Nautical Base.
Take the funicular railway from Val Claret to the heady altitude of 3032 metres, (train ticket included on our MyTignes pass), and you will reach the foot of the Grande Motte glacier. Here, you can enjoy the panoramic terrace to view the surrounding peaks and the massifs of Mont Pourri, the Grande Sassière ridges, Grande Casse (highest point of the Vanoise: 3,856m) and the majestic Mont Blanc range.
Visit the terrace in the sunshine (remember your sunscreen!) and enjoy a coffee or lunch at the Panoramic restaurant with views to remember. You can then walk around the snowline or go for a high altitude hike on local rocky terrain in this incredible high mountain zone. No special gear necessary, just a pair of stout walking shoes or trainers.
As an added extra - you can then take the cable car from the Panoramic terrace to ascend to 3,456m where you will be fully in the glacial zone. Here, you can walk around a limited area and enjoy spectacular views. The rooftop of the cable car is an additional €10 supplement, on sale at the top of the funicular railway arrival point in ticket machines. The upgraded ‘rooftop ride’ comes with a guide telling you about the glacier as you ascend. It’s a nice touch, but not essential.
At the top you will be in a glacial zone, so walk around the immediate area and snow line but do not stray from the marked and secured areas.
