Summer ski & board

Skiing and boarding on a summer glacier is a really fun experience and the snow conditions can be just as good as they are in April - even with fresh snow on occasions.  You may not have as many runs open, but it is far less busy (than winter) and a really unique experience in T-shirts when the sun is out.

Opening & conditions

The glacier is open from mid-to-late June through to the end of July or early August depending on snow conditions. During these 7 or 8 weeks of opening the conditions will vary according to the weather but expect hard conditions in the morning (gradually softening) on the cloudy days and softer conditions the sunnier the days get. In other words, get up earlier (and the lifts open just before 7am) if the weather is hot and sunny!

What to expect

You will have about 20 Kms of piste open, served by 4 to 5 lifts. The slopes close to skiers at 1pm and by that time we either retire to the wonderful Panoramic restaurant for lunch or coffee and cake and the best views in the Alps (at 3,000m) or we descend the funicular in search of more active fun in the afternoon. And there’s plenty of activities to choose from in Tignes.

Activities in Tignes

A holiday with unrivalled variety

We think that when the glacier is open (in early summer) it provides almost the perfect active holiday. The glacier opens at 7am (just before in fact) and so you can pack a lot into your day with an early ski or board in the morning, followed by a resort activity in the afternoon such as tennis... mountain biking... climbing... paddleboarding… or just enjoying the hot alpine sun that Tignes is famous for.

Tignes Activities

The snow conditions

Expect reasonable quality snow in the morning, which will soften quickly. The snow warms and softens nicely through the morning which means you don't need to be on that first lift up! Take it easy instead… that’s what summer skiing is all about!

However, it often snows up top (even in July!) and on some days you can get powdery conditions and even off-piste. Generally, the pistes are easy to ride and there is a beginner green area which is large and pleasant for novice skiers, boarders and families to use.

Hire and lift passes

On arrival in the resort, our Active Team can arrange lift passes and ski or board hire for you. They will help you get fitted for skis, furnish you with a lift pass and get you oriented around the resort - though our hotel is so close to the ski shops and lifts, you’ll not need their help much!

Learning to ski and board in summer is a good time. The slopes are less busy and you don't need so many Kilometres open, so you can save a fortune over learning in winter and frankly skiing and boarding in the sun is a lot nicer!
