A selection of some of our favourite road rides in the Morzine region. There are plenty more, but here’s a few to get you excited! There are plenty more to read up on in this Guide Velo.
Start from Avoriaz for added descent & ascent
A great leg warming ride for the experts and a satisfying loop for the intermediates. This easy to follow route has a steady but not-so-steep climb, the highest point of which is Les Gets.
Climb steadily out of Morzine (or down from Avoriaz and then up out of Morzine) in the direction of Les Gets on the main road D902. Ride through Les Gets and follow the mountain road which switches back all the way down to Taninges. Ride briefly through the town and take a right turn signposted to the village of ‘Rond’ on the D307. It's a steady and smooth climb up to the Pont des Gets on a quiet road before you return to Morzine, or Avoriaz. The D902 out of Les Gets is the only busy road, but it's a fast descent to Taninges so not many cars will overtake. The climb for the return to the Pont des Gets is very quiet.
An intermediate ride from Morzine
A fairly simple route that begins with a 30km downhill along the valley floor before you begin the climb home. A beautiful ride for good intermediate riders. It passes through the villages of Le Jotty & Bellevaux
Head out of Morzine in the direction of Thonon on the D902 through St Jean D’Aulps and onwards to le Jotty. At le Vernaz, hang a left and climb to Vailly on the D22. Carry on to Bellevaux on the D26 climbing the relatively easy Col du Jambaz on route to Megevette via the D226. This brings you out just short of Mieussy on the D907. Ride through the town and follow the signs for the Col de la Ramaz which goes up immediately. If you’re low on energy then try the Patisserie in the centre of town. At this point you’ll have been riding for 1 ½ - 2 hours and you’ll have another 1 ½ – 2 hours to go. Up to an hour or so of this is the climb of the Ramaz itself - so be prepared. After descending through the Praz-de-Lys join the D903 at the Pont des Gets and return to Morzine via the main road through Les Gets.
Another col that has featured many times in the Tour de France is the Joux Verte. It is reached via a loop that you can do either way, but generally it is considered that the route clockwise from Morzine is the best. From Morzine, first ride down into Montriond before a long and steady climb up to the lake and then on to the village of Ardent.
The road here becomes steep and narrow, but it is very quiet. After a 25 min climb you will reach the Village of Goats. Stop for coffee and pastries then continue a mile or so up into Lindarets (for more mountain restaurants) before the final uphill stretch towards Avoriaz. The cycle back is down, down, down all the way!
One of the area’s most popular road bike routes to the pretty town of Samoens. The road from Morzine to Samoens will test many of us, but will also deliver the most in return for your efforts. With spectacular tree-lined accents and astonishing views of Mont Blanc (along with an amazing descent into Samoens), this is a truly great ride.
For the 35Km option:
Simply ride one-way (which is the easy part) and get a taxi back. Or, do the full return trip and take-in the long (but not too steep) ascent back to Les Gets and Morzine from Taninges.
Samoens is a picturesque village with some fine history, alpine botanical garden and beautiful architecture. Discovering Samoëns, means to dive into alpine history.
